The Birth of White Horse Family Wellness

Writer: Dr. Kristen MittenessDr. Kristen Mitteness

After managing Lifemark, I never thought I would ever run my own clinic. But, life has a funny way of offering alternative paths.

I was afraid to move to St. Francois Xavier. I was afraid of not having the conveniences of the city. I loved that I could walk to the grocery store or thrift store in less than 10 minutes. I loved my neighborhood, I loved my neighbors. But, we had bought the land a few years ago, at a time when the world was different and being outside of the city seemed like a better choice. And we sold the house. We were moving.

What do you know? It has been incredible. Daycare fell into place. I made friends with children close to Madison's age and we met at the park weekly. It has been such a beautiful time.

Then, I noticed a building for sale in Headingley. I drove by it every day. Finally, I looked into it. Should I purchase it and start a clinic? What would that look like? How would I fund it? What are the next steps? Do I really want to do this? Do I actually want the responsibility of owning a clinic?

The building didn't pan out. But, then I noticed another spot for rent and reached out. It used to be a chiropractic clinic. And after that physio. The layout might actually work for us. The rent is affordable. And one of those moms I meet at the park? She's also a chiropractor. Maybe she'd want to join me.

So, we spent every park date fantasizing about what this would look like. What did we really want in a clinic? Would we make more money than we currently are? Or at least as much?Would it make sense to take on the risk and responsibility when our current work lives were so comfortable? Are we actually going to do this?!

The clinics I was working out of were never my long term plan. But I enjoyed being at both of them and was happy to work there. Now that we lived in St. Francois Xavier, I knew I wanted to work closer to home. I love the community of Headingley and it is growing rapidly. There are lots of businesses in the area, but not many personal services. A chiropractor will eventually open up in the town. If we don't do it, someone else will. We decided to do it.

We decided we would aim for spring 20205, but the landlord had the space available December 2024 and wanted us in as soon as possible. Whew. That seemed really fast and we hadn't secured funding yet. Turns out, funding took longer than we expected and put us back on track for spring 2025. We got the keys for February 1, 2025 and gave ourselves two months to get it going. Our dream clinic is on it's way.

Opening day is April 7, 2025... here we go!
