Fish Oils 101

Dietary sufficiency of EPA and DHA Omega-3 fatty acids is essential for proper function of every cell, tissue, organ and gland in the brain and body. Because these fats are not made within the body, they must be supplemented. Today, our diet is extremely deficient in these essential fatty acids. In addition, the increase of processed foods and sugars causes an increase in the rate of degeneration and inflammation in our bodies resulting in more disease, illness and pain. DHA is a major factor in neurological function and development in humans. EPA is essential in promoting an anti-inflammatory state within the body.

Today, our diet is high in Omega-6 fatty acids which promote inflammation. Ideally, our fatty acid ratio of 6 to 3 should be 2:1. Most people eating a standard North American diet have a ratio of 20:1! It’s no wonder we are so sick and tired.

The best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids come from animal sources. Wild caught fish and grass fed beef are quite high Omega-3 fatty acids. Plant sources such as flax also contain these fats; however they are in the form of ALA which humans can only convert about 5% into the bio-available EPA/DHA.

It is absolutely necessary to consume toxin free sources of EPA and DHA for optimal health. Look for GMP certified sources that are third party tested. Please, don’t waste your money on poor quality supplements! I would rather you not supplement at all then to take poor quality supplements that may cause more harm than good.

Both liquid and capsule form of the highest quality fish oils are available at Lifemark Nature Park Way. The amount of supplementation is case dependent. Feel free to ask Dr. Kristen how much you should be supplementing.
